our story


The Breaking Bread Bakery represents an "encore career" for Mark and Glenna Evans. Glenna enjoyed a career as a successful hairstylist and photographic artist, while Mark comes to baking after a 35 year career of creating and managing software products for various segments of the building industry.

Mark prepared for this new career with a thorough education. He started his training with classes at King Arthur Flour under Jeffrey Hamelman, a Certified Master Baker trained in France, Germany, and Ireland. Mark then completed a two year degree program in Baking and Pastry Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, highly regarded as one of the top culinary schools in the country. There, Mark studied under nationally known artisan bakers Richard Miscovich and Mitch Stamm. Mark has been a member of the Bread Bakers Guild of America since 2008.

Glenna and Mark Evans moved to San Luis Obispo to open their bakery after visiting and considering several communities across the country. They formerly lived in Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, and New Hampshire.

We believe in second chances. Over the years, our staff has included former inmates, homeless, and others with very difficult pasts. Others have been pursuing second (or third) careers. Some have been wildly successful with us; some have not. But we feel that providing opportunites and skills to those who are trying to put lives back together is a valuable contribution to the community that has adopted us.


On Christmas Eve of 2021, Glenna and Mark made their last trip to the Cambria Farmers Market and sold their last bread, croissants, cookies, and muffins. They still loved baking and greeting customers, but were very frustrated with some aspects of their business. They sold their condo and most of their possessions, subleased the bakery space, and sold the equipment. They visited with family in the Midwest for three weeks. They came back to San Luis Obispo to pick up their visas and left on February 24 for their new home in Europe.

Glenna and Mark gifted themselves with a "second chance." They are enjoying retirement and building a new life in a new country and new culture. You can follow their story for a while on the Breaking Bread Bakery pages on Facebook and Instagram.
